Effective Nurse Leader Paper
Introduction
In the contemporary nursing field, there is so much growth and opportunities for individuals practicing the nursing profession. The growth and opportunities are as a result of the high rates of turnover and nurse shortage. One of the most significant opportunities that promise growth is becoming a nurse manager and leader. However, not everyone can attain such a position. It takes knowledge, hard work and a high degree of discipline to elevate within the different levels of the nursing profession. This paper presents a report of the interview conducted with a nurse leader. Some of the key things that will be examined are the characteristics of leadership in nursing and healthcare, the leadership and management behaviors that foster effective nurse management and a self-assessment in regard to assuming a nurse leadership role.
Characteristics of an Effective Nurse Leader/Manager from Nurse Leader Interview
The effective nurse leader interview was conducted outside the hospital at a local restaurant. The interviewee, Ms. A.D. was very polite and respectful during the session. She has worked at the hospital for more than ten years. Her excellence and elevation to the nurse leader role are a result of several advanced degrees and certifications that she holds in addition to extensive years of experience she has been practicing as a healthcare provider. Currently, she is a manager of 3N and the float unit. Based on the interview, Ms. A.D. has numerous effective nurse leader characteristics. However, one characteristic that stood out is effective communication skills.
It is imperative for nurse leaders to be in a position of communicating clearly and effectively with their staff and patients. It is also crucial for them to be in the capacity of listening attentively, express concerns and ideas efficiently and offer constructive feedback. While working as a nurse, it is important to understand that there are people from diverse backgrounds. Therefore, one has to be able to communicate with individuals from different cultures and different levels of education (Hassan, Azmat & Hussain 2021). A good example to illustrate effective communication skills is when a nurse presents a complaint regarding their workload. In her case, she stated that when a nurse presents concerns about feeling overwhelmed due to their workload, it is important for the nurse leader to listen and empathize with the nurse. She often creates time to have a sit down with the complainant and come up with solutions that will help mitigate the situation. Making time to have a chat with subordinates makes them feel heard and fosters a positive working environment and a sense of belonging.
